Does anybody else feel the waves of history crashing over them constantly and like they can't escape the generational trauma that permeates and poisons every interaction they have or do I just need to chill and have a drink lol
#'our day has come and we are here. we are alive here. we've built this place. we suffered and starved here.#we own not an acre of land we belong to it. the land of cú chullain and macha. ní muid 'hungry crocodiles'. we are full.#full of knowledge. and talent. and success.#full of drink. and drugs. and stories.#agus beautiful ceol. that spills on sundays. from the windows of ancient pubs like smoke#tá vóta agam. tá acht Gaeilge agam. agus táimid sa rialtas.#we are the landscape. we are the trees and the rivers and the mountains. an integral piece of someone else's infrastructure.#growing strong between cracks in the concrete.'#and whatever else seán an seanchaí said.....#would recommend his instagram. his posts always hit#ngl tho when men post stuff like this about ireland i always think...do you see the similarities between this and patriarchy tho?#but maybe im better off not knowing the answer#whatever!!! we will persevere!!! we will help one another and build trust and relations and improve no matter what governments say or do!!!#just like generations have been doing before us!!! and we who have benefited from our parents making this place better will work to make it#better for our children. who will make it better for theirs.#and maybe i need to stop shying away from difficult conversations. maybe we all do. and maybe then we'll be okay.#my thoughts on mental health + the north + my own personal experience is such a mish mash of several different things#im only truly starting to realise that it's all connected. yes i got depression because i was lonely and vulnerable. but also because of th#trauma my family's been through. and sometimes i feel so angry thinking about what certain family members have been through#and there has been too much silence surrounding it. but maybe i just have to feel the anger and sadness and allow myself to feel it#but continue reaching out and trying to talk and having cups of tea and walking my dog and making memories.#memories that aren't political or based on trauma. to get out of my head and realise that yes this was a terrible thing#but there's so many good things too. and the best thing i can do is to try to make life better for those who lived through the worst of it#and make society better for those who are too young to know any of it yet.#instagram is actually a tonic for me sometimes. would never get such taig specific posts on here like the one from seán#which is probably a good thing lol

HEY HOW ARE WE FEELING ABOUT DEDF1SH/ACHT BEING CANONICALLY THEY/THEM
I think I've unwittingly become the fucking Splatoon Gender Bad News Guy but I would not get your hopes up in the slightest:
The translation in Splat 3 has been kind of Weird, not with the major shit as far as I know (thankfully) but with little things on the side; they have little oddities that would not be fucking there if the English team were communicating well with the JP team, which doesn't inspire confidence in the quality of their already pretty Meh english twitter posts.
I would watch the info on Dedf1sh's Official Bio on their splatbands info section of their website:
(sorry every website I use is in comic sans it's the firefox settings)
If they change Ded's pronouns to they/them in here, THEN I would get out the bottles. Or if they use they/them in the actual game when Side Order comes out.
tldr: bizarrely, I super would not trust the goddamn official Twitter account for info which is certainly a fucking sentence but it's true! Shit's weird. Shit's weird in the game even. Just don't get your hopes up and get them shattered or god forbid start up discourse I can't do this again you Cannot Start Dedcourse 2. HOLD YOUR HORSES EVERYONE we have jumped the gun on Dedf1sh Translation before and it ended in disaster learn from the mistakes of the past
#sorry im kind of talking to a General Audience here bc this is a bit of an info post. ''you'' isn't specifically you!#splatoon#asks#duskittycat#dedf1sh#splatoon 3#splatoon side order#ive been calling shiver's situation Dedcourse 2 but IT'S ACTUAL DED THIS TIME#nintendo barely has a grasp on binary trans people let alone nonbinary people you have to set your expectations a little lower

okay new dark ask incoming, we know what happens if the partners saw the other/ their kid die infront of them, but what if instead they got hospitalized and had to visit them in the hospital?
If Acht, Four, Harmony, or Gibbous were in the hospital, all the others would just not leave. Like they’d all stay in the hospital the entire time until they’re better. Every now and then one will leave to go get something, but none of them will be gone for long.
For Callie, Elita, and Lyra they’d just be worried about whichever one of them is hopsitalized. They send a bunch of gifts and spend as much time in the hospital with them as they can.
Marie, Shina, and Cassie have probably been through this with Cassie before, seeing how often she gets hurt. Though I’m going to say this would be way mroe severe than any other reason she had been in the hopsital, so they’d be way more worried than normal. Though they’re also all close friends with the hospital staff at this point, so they know they can trust them to do a good job.
Shiver, Birch, Megan, Don, and Kai are both concerned for who’s hospitalized and mad at whatever the reasone was, wheather is was an accident or someone who hurt them. They’d find a way to sure someone for sure.
I’m guessing that for Frye, Elle, and Pixel, the only one that could actually be hospitalized is Frye because she’s the only one with an organic body. Elle and Pixel would probably just go to Marina for help, and even if they were severely damaged it’s not that big of a deal since she could just make them a new robot body and transfer the code. But they would be super worried about Frye if she was in the hospital, since they don’t know how easy it is for her to heal. They can get better as fast as Marina can fix them, but for her it takes a longer time than that.
Pearl, Marina, and Kaito would all be very very scared for whoever is in the hopsital. I can imagine Pearl trying to bribe the nurses to get them better treatment, but there’s not much the nurses and doctors can do that they aren’t already doing. She still gives them the money though, wanting them to do whatever they can. In the case that Pearl is the one hospitalized, Marina would be tyring to help the medical staff, literally doing their jobs for them (and doing amazing at it).
Captain, Eight, Big Man, and their currently unnamed child (I need to think of something soon) would probably do something similar to Four, Acht, Harmony, and Gibbous in that they stay at the hopsital as long as they possibly can. There aren’t enough beds for all of them, and one of them can sleep on the couch, but one of them has to sleep on the floor. So they bring a sleeping bag and sleep on the floor. They would rather do that than leave their loved one’s side.
Thank you for the ask!!! This gives me an excuse to give all of them cool scars.

Any particular headcanons about Z.W.E.I. you want to infodump? No limits; as many as you like.
the headcanon about zwei that i think about the most really only works in this new timeline. and it stems from the fact that zwei is durers servant.
we all know that siegfried was miserable during the time he was fluctuating between himself and nm. no one ever really acknowledged siegfried as being himself, the servants of soul edge and their malfested just cared about their "king", nightmare
my headcanon is that zwei was the one exception to this. where everyone either ignored siegfried (ex: durer) or tormented siegfried (ex: acht), zwei was the only person who was actually kind to siegfried. especially when siegfried was trapped within the astral chaos and was protecting soul calibur. zwei would visit him often when he had chances to slip away in order to keep siegfried company. he would tell him about everything going on in the physical plane and he would ask siegfried to tell him stories, either ones that he enjoyed or stories about his life growing up from when times were happier in order to help him keep his mind off of his current situation
assuming zwei joins schwarzwind when hes older like he did in the old timeline, this is the reason why siegfried trusts zwei and holds him so close.
#laikaflash#thank you for the ask!!#soulcalibur#soul calibur#zwei#z.w.e.i.#headcanon: zwei#since you are our resident siegfried expert i would love to hear what you think about this headcanon

...Mirage...!
The Inkling shot up, taking deep breaths. Oh good, they weren't dead. Or were they? They were completely surrounded by white.
"Neo 3, are you alright?!"
They look up to see Octa, who was wearing a drastically different outfit. Instead of her black-clad outfit and cape, she was wearing a white suit, with straps around her shoulders. Her tentacles has changed color as well.
"I'm...fine, actually. I feel like I'm in perfect health." They replied, their hands digging into the pure white sand under them.
"Cool. Then get the shell up. Because we're in some serious trouble." Minu told them.
Mirage got to their feet, and was utterly shocked at the sight around them. It was Inkopolis Square, and yet...it was far from it. It looked like one of those dead coral reefs they read about. Lifeless. Colorless. Hopeless.
"Where...? Why...?! And where's the others? Sandy? Plat? Ess??"
"I'm...not sure, Mirage. They were not here when I awoke." Octa lowered her head. "Perhaps we can find some help-"
"EIIIIGHTTTTTT!!"
The three watched a small drone fly toward them at lightning speed, stopping right in front of Octa. "Hey!! How'd you get here? You know what, that doesn't matter, I need your help!!"
"S-Slow down! P...Pearl, is that you...?"
"Yeah! Can't you recognize me?!"
"Well...you're..."
"Oh, ignore the drone thing. I don't know either." She explained quickly. "Ayo, who are these two guys? Never seen 'em here before."
"Oh, that's right! This is the New Agent 3, Mirage. They stopped Mr. Grizz in Alterna. And this is Minu, she is also an agent alongside them. You two, this is Pearl, from Off the Hook!"
"Is every idol involved in some insane secret plot to destroy the world?! I just don't--" They shake their head. "Nevermind. Where are we?"
"Beats me. The Square from the looks of it but like...totally NOT the Square, yanno? But I get a feeling we'll get some more answers if we head into there." She looked in the direction of Deca Tower. "Cause it sure as heck ain't out here."
"Fair enough. Haha, this is like old times, huh, Pearl? Exploring weird places together."
"Hah, you bet!"
"What is...happening anymore..."
The four enter the building, Mirage noticing a mysterious set of lockers on the way.
"Um...this is NOT the inside of Deca Tower at all."
The Pearl Drone zoomed around the spacious room, the cephalopods following. "This place is whack..."
"Tell me about it..." Minu stared at the monochrome interior.
Octa didn't seem as surprised as the rest of them were, which Mirage could pick up on.
"Over there, we should head toward the elevator, no? I bet Marina and all of Mirage's friends are on a higher level." Octa pointed at the clean steel doors at the other end of the room.
"Oh, good thinkin', Eight!" Pearl hummed, zooming over, and the other three ran to catch up. And as the elevator doors slowly slid open...
"Woah. Looks like a party."
"Eh?! Is that a sanitized Octoling?! Eight-!!" Pearl yelled.
"Woah, cool it. No need to get all crazy on me. I won't hurt you." The Octoling put a hand up. They wore a hat with headphones, a sleek black dress, and knee-high boots.
"Who are you...?" Octa asked, tilting her head.
"....Ah, I go by a couple different names, but for the sake of simplicity, you can call me Acht." They spoke. "Sorta new to this place, myself, though going through the elevator enough times myself, I think I've got it figured out."
"...A few times? Are you riding up and down the elevator?" Mirage slouched.
"Nah. Come on in and I can show you."
"Hrmm....I don't know..." Pearl beeped.
"I trust them. I think they know what they're talking about." Octa nodded. "I'll lead the way. Let's go."
Pearl, Minu, and Mirage exchanged nervous looks before following Octa into the elevator.
"So. What are you doing in here?"
"Well, initially, me and my friends here were on a mission to stop whoever was causing the Square to go entirely unconscious, but now it seems, since joining, we are now on a large rescue mission....three agents, a Salmonling, and now Marina, as it happens..."
"Ah. I see. Fair enough." Acht looked away. "I was here initially before something went haywire about this place. And then a buncha kids and stuff showed up. And there was this real tall lady. Weird-looking, too. If I had to guess, she's behind this nonsense."
"That must be Tara." Minu grimaced. "But...none of this makes sense. We're...in the Square, are we not? Why does it look so different and weird? Where are the other unconscious people? And these clothes...and this elevator..."
"Hm. Can't really tell you exactly WHERE we are, but I can probably guess WHAT this place is. I think we're in a virtual reality right now."
"A...virtual reality?"
"Yep. Did you guys happen to be put to sleep before showing up here?"
"Yeah...we were." Mirage answered.
"Yep. It'd be wise to say that your real bodies are still unconscious in the....'Square' right now, but your minds are in here."
"That's crazy...so does this mean Tara....made a virtual reality?"
"I don't know. Barely seen this 'Tara' lady around, so I can't give you a straight answer."
"So what are YOU doing here?" Minu asked, suspiciously eyeing Acht.
They shrug. "Honestly...beats me. My memory is still a little hazy. I've only gotten some of them back recently. I suffer from a bit of amnesia."
"Ah...would you have happened to regain them while in here?"
"Yeah. Why?"
"Hmm..."
"Something up, Eight?" Pearl chimed in.
"I have a theory about this place...but I can't confirm it until we find Marina."
"Well then, the sooner we find her, the better! Full speed ahead!!"

(spoilers ahead for splatoon 3 DLC: Side Order. it contains things from marina's dev diaries, so keep this on hold if you want to see the lore with your own hard work.)
Do you guys feel like the first clear ending of side order is kinda confusing? [flashhhhhback-] (Pearl: There it is… Eight! I'm feeling your vibe!) [back to present!] that sentence absolutely explains nothing(TM). what did acht do before the qte? what's eight's vibe? and why did that restore them from greyscaling? It's basically a very poorly done Deus EX Machina, and that's one very poorly done Deus EX Machina too many in my book. so i decide to write a whole essay on what actually happened in my opinion.
some ground work: from marina's dev diaries we know that a palette is basically the template of someone's soul, the one thing left after going through sanitisation a/o greyscaling, and color chips are pieces of memories extracted from memcakes, which one must select the most suitable (aka most connected to themself) to place onto their palettes, before using them in practical battles, a literallization of processing outside world with their own memory, to become themselves again.
but here's the interesting part. if you pause and look at your palette during the Colorful, Vibrant Battle(the one where you become god), You will realize the palette is equipped with the 6 "spectrum chips", or, every single chip of that type. and it makes you FEEL something, according to its description. for red, "You feel like you're brimming with strength!", and purple, "You feel like the world has your back!", so on. these chips effectively, through their collective strength, made agent 8 feel the positive thought in these countless memories.
for power, it's unrivaled confidence. for support, it's the warmth knowing you'll never be alone. for range, it's the motivation to achieve whatever your aim is at. for mobility, (probably)the freeing sensation knowing you're shackled by reality no more. for lucky, the positive outlook that for once, everything will turn out fine. and drone, the trust in they who will never leave you come rain or shine.
(that is so sappy. never again)
All of them positive emotion birthed from the myriad of memories throughout the world. and one thing they have in common: they inspire change. to, with the power these memories grant you, stop stalling in your safety zone. to plunge into unknown. of course order disliked this. of course it pulled the souls with the most vibrant colors with the intent to bleach them so they don't want change anymore. of course they in turn is the only way to combat greyscaling. so of course, when the color chips resonated with the backing track acht played right before everything went to blank, it once again inspired eight to rise up again to change this bleak and inevitable end, and their allies to up the hype enough that even order can see the beauty of variability, randomness, and change.

Mostly just posting this so I remember how to write this down for when the dedf1sh/Marina EP drops (this is for the album's description)
Zwei kleine oktopusse, Getrennt von ozeanen tief, Auf der Suche nach einem höheren sinn Koste es, was es wolle, Achtung, kleine oktopusse, Denn was ihr beide sucht, Wird seinen preis haben
Um yeah so I intended for this short poem to be in German ('cause Acht) (also I feel like just writing this in German would really forshadow Acht's fate 'cause "achtung" means "beware" or "danger" in German and we all know what happened to our favorite octarian DJ when they ended up in the Deepsea Metro, the definition of octarian hell basically). Dunno how accurate the German in the poem is. Anyways, here's the English version of the poem:
Two little octopuses, Parted by oceans deep, In search of a greater purpose No matter the cost Beware, little octopuses, 'Cause what you both seek Will come at a cost
I don't usually write poetry out of my own free will (trust me I hate writing poetry for school like A LOT), so I dunno how high quality this stuff is. Anyways at least now I have something clever to put in the description for the dedf1sh/Marina EP when it comes out on Thursday.

I genuinely hope they take upon their time and seriously rewrite it or add more stuff to what is already there, even a follow up that add things to what already happened, maybe make a big overhaul update, because the story is so nonexistent that any fan fiction, even small or bad ones, might do more lore than SO in it's entirety.
If I were to rewrite it, here are some changes I would do first:
Pearl and Marina subtle/not subtle hints that they are basically engaged: big deal, we always knew that since OE and you could have made it more poignant and interesting if the reveal was tied with the player struggling to save Marina instead of getting her in the fucking tutorial or having them go uwu in the elevator (or the post game content energy the dialog had was baffling). It's not that I dislike it, but saving her would have been a nice first motivation (wich is, because it adds to the initial mystery of what the hell happened) and then reveal Order/Smollusk just like how it happens in game, but with him kidnapping Marina and imprisoning her because he wants to "fix" his creator. After returning to the base of the tower, we discover Marina managed to help us remotely, giving Acht access to the permanent upgrades and so give her a bigger role than the one of a glorified elevator attendant. Yes, this makes her a damsel in distress, but it's probably better than having her stay with you the entire time and explain everything, ruining the mystery.
The tower is ever changing, meaning that getting directly to him would be impossible. A way to have it make sense would be using the keys we gained to open up more palettes, and the more we open the more Smollusk's control weakens, eventually opening up the right floor to him. This makes the following runs even more worthwhile. Speaking of Acht herself, saying that she was wasted doesn't convey it enough, she's just... here, after the tutorial, just like Eight, but unlike her she doesn't even get out of the damn elevator!
Eight's main motivation can easily be the classic quest to save her friends, but having them all be saved at the start and then having to "save the souls" of the characters that don't even appear isn't enough for me.
Essentially just having the palettes is not compelling enough. One thing I saw in another post was the idea of having something similar to the Parallel Canon fight with 4 but personalized for every character. The last boss fight for everyone, instead of being Smollusk, could have been a fight inspired by the characters, with two major ones being the ones related to Eight itself: Octavio and herself. To make an example, if you use Marie's palette, then you have to beat her grayscaled version in a sniping duel. At this point she would appear in the plaza of the memverse and already make it more lively.
In many roguelikes the difficulty is often directly tied to the player progression: extremely hard to progress at first, but eventually beatable. The trick here is how satisfying it becomes for the player to progress through after many tries, gaining pieces of the story after every run, and getting stronger. SO does it too, but the difficulty is... baby's first roguelike. Roguelikes are my favorite type of games, so trust me on this when I say that this game got too easy, way too fast for it's own good: suffering and frustation are part of the experience my guys, it wouldn't be satisfying beating a boss or reach a new level if it wasn't hard to do it. Luck has always a factor in beating a run, but skill is always the biggest part of the gameplay: games like ETG and Hades (wich I have beaten) balanced this wonderfully, while I think I have beaten SO for the first time with Octavio's palette, after only 6 failed runs. It's ridiculous, it has to be way harder (this on brand with modern Nintendo making most of their games piss easy)
Smollusk deserves way better.
Splatoon 3: Side Order is good, but not great. I still highly recommend it, but if you care about the story, you're going to be disappointed. Quick review: spoilers ahead.
Side Order was the devs experimenting with Splatoon's gameplay loop. The campaign is a rogue-like, and it works amazingly well. Super fun, super challenging, building my deck and fighting through challenges with the stakes of resetting really scratched an itch in my brain. They did a great job with it.
Unfortunately, I feel like priority went to game design rather than story. Much of the mysterious artwork we saw in the first teaser trailer was completely unused; turns out, all of that was just concept art that never made it into the final product. Side Order failed to make me care about what was happening. I don't know why the protagonist had to be Agent 8; it could've been anyone else and the story would've worked the same.
Octo Expansion was the absolute peak of meshing story and gameplay. The campaign's hook is insanely strong; we immediately empathize with Agent 8 because we know from previous lore that octolings like her have been trapped underground for all their lives. We care about her fight to the surface because it's a fundamentally ideological fight for freedom. The plot stuff about Tartar and the Thangs is just nice set dressing; 8's fight for freedom is the real story.
There's none of that in Side Order. I don't particularly care about Marina's metaverse, even if it's tied to Octo Expansion's story. I don't know why Acht is there other than backstory stuff. It really feels like 8 is just told to do something and she does it because she's the protagonist; she has zero personal stakes or motivations in the conflict. This is a story blunder the devs did in Splatoon 3's default campaign––forgetting to give the protagonist a personal reason to fight––that I hoped would be fixed here, but alas.
What makes it worse is that the gameplay and story progression are completely out of sync. I beat the entire game on my third run in 4 hours. With each run, you get up to two keys to potentially unlock bits of story. That means you'll get about one piece of the story every two runs. There are twelve pieces of the story; I got the first and then beat the whole damn game. Now I have to go back and grind to see the remaining story when I've already beaten the final boss and resolved the conflict. I missed the entire story because I never had to reset because I blazed through the gameplay! It's just a real shame that I experienced everything without knowing... why it's happening. The final boss had me asking myself what the hell is going on because I don't know the backstory at all.
Again, I still really recommend. The devs did a great job, but Side Order remains in the shadow of Octo Expansion's incredible success. Like the default singleplayer campaign, there's just a lot of lost story potential here that, while not necessary, would have really elevated this DLC into something amazing.

MAG026, A Distortion
Case #0160204, Sasha James Release date: July 6, 2016 First listen: Somewhere between the 20th October and the 5th November. I think it was on the walk home, I remember crossing the bridge as we meet what was once Timothy Hodges
We haven’t had a huge amount of time with Jon and his team but I think this episode gives us a little insight into the dynamic of the archival team and also re-establishes some characteristic that fandom had coloured in my mind. I think Jon cares about his assistances, each differently and with some funny ways of showing it, but I think he does. When he was elevated to Head Archivist, he requested Tim and Sasha as his assistances. It’s indicated that he has worked with them before and he knows them, trusts their abilities and skills. And I think there is an element of him trusting them in a social setting too. He knows them, knows how they tick. Jon’s personality and demeanour may make him difficult to approach or difficult to befriend, he’s giving me a lot of feral cat energy. I don’t know if we ever get any sort of confirmation of if Jon is neurodivergent, but I’m projecting so all the archival team is neurodivergent in my mind, but change may be hard for him to process and adapt to. Change such as a new set of responsibilities without clear handover instructions and settling in period, a new dynamic with work colleagues and a new member of the team. I can’t remember off the top of my head if Martin had been working at the institute before joining Jon’s team, but the live reads do confirm Jon didn’t know him prior to becoming Head Archivist. But Jon knows Tim and Sasha. I wonder if Jon is dealing with imposter syndrome, well actually I reckon that’s a given, but I mean with regards to being promoted over other, more suitable candidates. The fandom loves to discuss Sasha as the brains of the outfit, possibly the only one of them with any sort of training in library sciences, she may be the most competent one there. But Elias isn’t looking for competent, he’s looking for malleable and volatile and already in a state of quiet terror. Terror that they’ll be found out; Jon that he’s not up to the job, Martin that he’s lied. Then there’s Tim who is trying to find out what happened to his brother. In the midst of all this, Sasha doesn’t appear as anything more than another victim of the Glass Ceiling. Which I bet Elias would utilise that regardless, fucking product of his time. I so want to know how Gertrude fought her way into the role more.
I think Jon has got a lot of affection for both Sasha and Tim, but now he’s in the role of ‘Boss’, he’s having to temper it. There are moments of fondness and concern that bleeds in, and he wants her to recover and take care of herself. He trusts her judgement, more so than the others. Which is just brutal when she is the first to fall.
- Once again, in the style of Grizzop drik acht Amsterdam around the 41minute mark of RQG 92 – Bringing Down The House SASHA! I beg you to listen to Rusty Quill Gaming it is a joy. Ben Meredith, voice of Elias Bouchard, plays first a sad dwarven sea dad, then a smoky little beef cake of a goblin paladin. I love Grizzop and the friendship he has with Lydia Nicholas’ Sasha Racket is just a thing of beauty, but I whole heartedly love my stabby daughter.
- Sasha doesn’t shy away from calling Jon out on the possibly preferential treatment he’s giving her, suggesting she go home and recover. Martin wasn’t offered such treatment, but as Jon points out, he didn’t have a safe home to go to for recovery. He also said Martin wasn’t injured, which he wasn’t but he had been in solitary confinement and psychologically tortured for 2 weeks so I’d say some TLC was warranted.
- He sounds vaguely indulgent as he’s introducing her statement and I’m soft.
- Sasha disparaging Martin’s self preservation instincts sits real weird with me. Sasha seeks refuge in artefact storage, alone, in the confusion of Prentiss’ attack, when so much about Martin’s character is so much about survival. Also, her tone breaks my heart a little, it’s not cruel but… it’s not the kindest either. I think in the elapsed time, my mind’s just built her up to be the caring older sister of the group, something of a Katara or a Hermione. Which is probably some internal bias rearing their ugly heads, odds are it’s a me problem.
- We get some more insight into Jane Prentiss. We have 9 Flesh Hive related deaths that the listeners know about at this point; 7 at the hospital (6 from colonisation), Harriet Lee and, soon, Timothy Hodge.
- While Martin has sought refuge at the Institute, the Flesh Hive does not appear to have finished with him or the archival team. By the sounds of it, worms laying siege to the Institute. I wonder what the other departments are coping? Also, is it safe to assume that Prentiss has taken up residency in the tunnels at this point?
-. So, so far we know that Sasha lives in Finsbury Park and Martin lives in Stockwell. Think that’s it for the team so far. I’d say she has the longer commute possibly. But at the mention of ‘…my building is old. Victorian,’ I had a near Pavlovian response, something in my head going on point and demanding ‘Smirke?!’ A name that can illicit such a violence within me, second only to that of Leitner.
- And hello Michael. Or at least whatever it is that wears his face these days.
- There’s something about seeing something for what it really is through glass or in a mirror that is really stomach dropping. A missing reflection from the mirror telling you that may be a vampire you’re dancing with vampire, suddenly a kitsune’s tails are there, a fae’s glamour doesn’t hold up under glass.
- ‘I was as surprised as anyone that this undeniably sinister figure wasn’t causing me more distress. To be honest, I was surprised how quickly I accepted that.’ I think fear’s like hypothermia; when you stop shivering is when you’ve really got to worry.
- We also get a bit of an insight into how Sasha thinks, when she confesses she’s been a bit of a skeptic, like Jon. Or at least, like Jon presents to be, but we later find a bit about Jon’s reasons for his connections to researching the esoteric.
- I wondered if there was any significance to the purchasing of lilies. I love flower language me, but all the meanings I could find were pretty positive things, no harbingers of doom. Then I remembered that they are very toxic to cats and… Sasha’s been talking about her curiosity a lot…
- ‘I really wish it wasn’t in Chelsea. Everything around here is so expensive.’ Fucking Johan. Posh twat. It just feeds into the unease of the place and its’ staff. We’ve hear how Martin’s worried about money and Sasha’s painfully aware. Johan set it in an expensive part of London then employs academics who can’t afford the area, just feeding into that loop of uneasiness. But the fact that she gets out of the Tube at Victoria to walk might narrow down where the Institute building is, It wouldn’t be hard to jump on the Central and District line to head further into Chelsea, but as Sasha says she walks from Victoria station, that may put it in the east end of Chelsea, right in the shadow of Westminster to the east.
- ‘Once is happenstance, twice is coincidence, three times is enemy action’. 1. Rule of three, 2. I am stealing that phrase, 3. Nothing to add, but it’s the rule of three.
- ‘“Are you secretly a monster?”’ probably would have been a great opener.’ It’s the Throat of Delusion. It lies. It could have said ‘yes’ but it wouldn’t matter because you own reasoning brain would lie for it.
- Jon and Tim were arguing about Smirke! A confirmed mention of another dusty old bastard who wanted to fuck around and found out. Gerard should have been allowed to beat him up too, as a treat.
- ‘I know, but it would have to have been Martin, wouldn’t it? I mean, anything goes wrong around here, it always seems to happen to him.’ Leave my boy alone. Maybe it always seems to be him because you are watching him like a hawk all the time.
- ‘Seriously? If a member of the public came in, you would have torn that statement to shreds.’ I think Sasha quiet brave for actually talking to Jon and having him in the room as she gives her statement. The assistances have more than likely all seen and heard what Jon makes of the run of the mill statements, ripping into them and their authors with not too much care or regard. I think Sasha is right to be hesitant in that regard. I wonder if this hesitancy from his team gives Jon any pause?
- ‘My curiosity apparently conquered my nervousness.’ In one of the later Q&As, Alex and Jonny discuss what D&D class each of the characters would be, and it’s agreed that Sasha would be a wizard, and this statement is giving me big ‘complete disregard for my own safety there is knowledge to be sought’ energy.
- ‘…no, not for him. For it.’ I’m glad Sasha’s dehumanising The Distortion from the off. The fact that Distortion!Helen was able to build such a rapport with the Archival team in later series was always a source of concern. The Distortion is many things, but it can not be your friend.
- ‘…and told me that I had no idea what was really going on. It didn’t sound like it had any intention of telling me, though.’ The board is set, the pieces are moving. And we don’t get to know the rules.
- ‘By this point I was just about sick of this weird thing that looked like a person.’ Sasha’s got the right of it, but it gets harder and harder. Not only as we learn of the Avatars and meet them, but as members of the cast get consumed more and more by The Entities and as Jon struggles with what he becomes and what he sets in motion.
- The idea that The Distortion knows the archival team is one to indeed create an ‘unsettling’ feeling to feed into the dread, but my brain wants to know the logistics. Does an unexplained randomly appear in the HR office one evening after lock up?
- Tim’s April Fools’ joke! Confirmation Office Jester. Give him the jingly hat!
- So it’s about 10miles from Hanwell Cemetery to Victoria Station. Nearly 50mins by public transport at time of checking, 9:30pm. It’s about 12 to 13miles as the crow flies from Manor House Station in Finsbury Park, over an hour by public transport. She’s going out of her way. And is this going to be travel expenses reimbursed and over time paid? Doubt it.
- ‘…a threat or a warning or just a lie.’ I imagine they’re all one and the same to The Throat of Delusion.
- I’ve still got flower language on the brain so I had a look to see if azaleas meant much. Not a huge amount applicable, until I found that azaleas and rhododendrons were once so famous for their toxicity that to receiving a bouquet of the flowers in a black vase was a recognised death threat. So lilies and azaleas; poisonous, toxic. Seems about right for both The Corruption and The Spiral.
- ‘… though riddled with woodworm.’ Even the pub’s been chewed over.
- ‘… (not prepared) to seeing it. To smelling it.’ Jonny again leaning on the senses that lend themselves to the more visceral aspects of horror. The fact that smell can illicit such physical responses, such as throwing up as we’ve seen in previous Corruption and Flesh statements, but kudos to Sasha for holding it together.
- ‘I glanced desperately at Michael, but it just watched me, its face unreadable.’ It’s not your friend. It won’t be your friend.
- I did not like Timothy Hodge, but to be fair, that is one heck of an STD he got of Harriet… The fact that his body’s gone after the event is thoroughly strange to me. I’d be surprised if the body gave way under the force of the fire extinguisher but, even if it did, there’d be clothes and other items. Did Sasha keep hold of the wallet? Did she lose time, did Michael spirit the remains away? But it means that from 20th November 2015 to 1st April 2016, he’s been becoming the newest colony of the Flesh Hive.
- ‘I should really quit, you know. We, we all should. I don’t think this is a normal job, I, I don’t think this is a safe job.’ If memory serves, it may have already have been harder than it should have. I don’t think they were doomed just yet, I can’t remember the details that Elias reveals on the matter, but it would be hard. But similar to Jon, Sasha seems intent to stay out of curious. It’s not Jon’s drive, not the hunger to know and comprehend that will drive him into becoming The Archivist, but it’s there none the less. Which is why I think Sasha, ‘the most level-headed of the team’, would have fucked Elias up as The Archivist, and I would have loved to have seen it.

Fafner TBY ep 7 fan translation
I can’t wait for subs so I’ve decided to create my own subs
Warnings: spoilers, English isn’t my first language (neither is Japanese), CDC vocabulary is a nightmare for me so don’t expect too much on that front, I can’t remember every character’s name
This was the hardest of the three translations, no contest, so there will be a lot of (???) in there
Dylan: Urgh... Ruby-sama... *faints*
Alvis Lady with Buns: Please! Hurry up and come!
*A biker Festum appears in front of the 3 Alvis Ladies*
Alvis Lady with Buns: That can’t be..!
*the opening song plays*
Maris: I won’t let you protect them, Ashoka! If only these people could die, the battle would end!
*Maris spots Mark Nicht*
Kosoushi: I found you, Maris!
Maris: Soushi?!
*The biker Festum disappears in front of the 3 Alvis Ladies*
Ruby: Maris’ power has faded away. Ashoka, protect everyone!
*cuts to Fumihiko in the water*
TN: These were the most difficult lines to translate. Take them with a bigass grain of salt
Fumihiko: To Control [Room]... Move the center of command and the shield, and use the agency of observation (??) as a substitute! Now that our battle predictions have become chaotic, carry out Plan E, hop in the civilian boat and escape!
Matsuoka: Now, this is CDC!
TN: I can’t translate her next sentence so I’m skipping it
Matsuoka: If we lose, the island will sink!
Sui: Evacuation in Keel Block is complete. Updating Point. Shield at its peak(??) The enemy has broken through the battlefield. Azrael, Sein, Mark Acht!
Maya: Roger that. I will consolidate (???) the defense line
Miwa: What have you done, Maris?
Sui: The battlefield must be rebuilt/reorganized. Can you do it?
Reo: I’ll do it!
Mimika: I’ll do it! (but said in a different way than Reo) Urgh!
Reo: Are you okay, Mimika?
Mimika: I’m fine, I’m fine! The assimilation process will be cured if (???)
Mimika: Here I go! Goubaiiiiiiinnnnnn!
Pilot: Burugirumu Unit, all prepared to go out! We will protect the island of (??)
Alvis Lady’s voice: Burugirumu 02, clear for take off
Mitsugu (not sure if it’s really him. Anyway, he’s piloting a plane): That’s Ashoka’s Leaf Coating! You think i will fall victim to this kind of WAM?!
TN: WAM = Wide Area Munition
Mitsugu: Tch...He’s* making us humans fight each other!
* There was no pronoun specified here, but I’m assuming he’s refering to Maris or Malespero
Shohei: Kuh...! *dies*
Mitsugu: Shohei...! Damn it!
*Misao destroys several Festum*
Misao: At this rate, Mom will be in danger!
Koyo: Don’t withdraw, Kurusu! If we withdraw, we will lose a way of counter-attacking. We will defend against the enemy here!
*enters Kazuki*
Kazuki: I can feel suffering....Dad?
Legato: You again?!
Kazuki: Even if we fight, Soushi will not come back [to you]!
Legato: He WILL come back! As promised, I will destroy you painlessly!
*cuts to Fafners’ Hangar*
Blond Engineer Man: It looks like the enemy has infiltrated and attacked the CDC
Tamotsu: How could this happen.... [number of] casualties?
Blond Engineer Man: Unknown but Plan E is being carried out (??)
Tamotsu: We’re going to throw away an island again?!
Kenji: The time hasn’t come yet. For now, let’s regain our strenght and trust these guys
*Chocolat whines*
Yoko: they are fighting for our sakes and yet... how many times must I make the same mistake...?
*cuts to Sein*
Miwa: Please..... I’m sure you guys don’t want to fight either.... Ah!
Maya: Miwa-chan!
Miwa: Stop it! Please!
*A robotic English voice says “Fenrir, Start”*
Miwa: I’m sorry I couldn’t stop you....
*Miwa creates golden rays of light with her sword*
Miwa: This isn’t supposed to be your guys’ blessing...
Selenoa: Let’s use human weapons. Soushi and Miwa are inside the vessels. Even if other humans are annihilated, [these two] will survive
Sui: The first armed group of the enemy has been destroyed. Let’s rebuild the defense line. A strategic bomber...! Azrael!
Maya: Target confirmed. If you fight like humans, then I have countless ways to stop you! I can see it!
*cuts to Mark Nicht*
Maris: [I can’t believe] you’re riding Nicht! I’m counting on you, Selenoa!
Kosoushi: Don’t run away, Maris! Fight me!
Selenoa: Stop right here!
*Kosoushi is teleported into Rina’s dream world*
Kosoushi: What’s this...?
Maris: Good, let’s take Soushi’s heart [with us]
Selenoa: His heart will be separated from his body. In that case (??)
Maris: Right now, I don’t have any other choices!
*Kosoushi looks at May and Noel*
Kosoushi: you two are..?!
Sui: I have confirmed the enemy has launched an attack on the Crossing [System]! Psycho (??) Phase, Mindblock, Start!
Kosoushi: Argh!
Selenoa: I won’t let you escape!
Misao: If you (???), I will eat you!
Selenoa: In that case, I will assimilate you!
Sui: Mindblock, success! Susanoo, follow!
Kosoushi: What....Aah!
Maris: Go to sleep.... I will create the place [where you belong]
Reo: Maris, huh? As usual, when you’re absorbed in something, you can no longer see what’s around you
Maris: Reo-san, you can still pilot a Fafner... You’re going to die
Reo: it’s because you guys disappeared. After everything you’ve done, I hope you have prepared yourself
Maris: Of course, I did that before leaving the island
*he gets attacked by Troopers*
Maris: Damn it!
Reo: you’re full of holes! I’ll let you play with them!
Mimika: Welcome back, you two!
Kosoushi: this is... Orijima?
Reo: Next time you ignore orders I’m gonna beat you up!
Kosoushi: You won’t believe me anyway!
Mimika: we let you go because we believed in you! Did you think we wouldn’t stop you?
Kosoushi: Remember this! If you notice anything, say it! Sui will change his strategy and we’ll all fight together. Understood?!
Kosoushi: yes....
Reo: You’re such a troublesome disciple.... Let’s go!
Misao: It’s calling a swarm again!
Koyo: Let’s stop [this Festum]! Otherwise the island will sink!
Sui: the second armed group of the enemy has been destroyed. Sein! Azrael! Updating Point. Now....this is it...
Legato: I’ll show you my power, Makabe Kazuki! (???) and I’ll destroy you!
Sui: Good, all the right conditions are in place. Achilles, Updating Point. Please release your unit’s power
Legato: Where are you going?! Are you running away?!
Sui: ....checkmate
Kazuki: Akira, I’m going to use your vessel
Legato: What?!
Maris: Malespero’s domain is being disarranged/disturbed. Is that the power of the island’s Mir? No, It’s that Fafner’s power!
Miwa: Kazuki-onii-chan....
Maya: Kazuki-kun...
Misao: Kazuki...
Koyo: The vessel is going to awaken! Let’s leave!
*Kazuki screams*
TN: I can’t translate Legato’s line so I’m skipping it
Maris: Legato!
Selenoa: He ate our faithful [troops]! What a monster!
*Kazuki falls into Nothingness*
Kazuki:.....Soushi...
Misao: The time to go to that side hasn’t come yet, Kazuki
Koyo: Go to sleep, for the sake of the people who need you
Blond Engineer Man: Salvator, huh? It’s a success
Tamotsu: we have created yet another monster with our own hands...
Sui: the Salvator Model in which existence and nothingness are linked... Mark Alles.... We can win [with this]
Reo: Mimika....
Mimika: I’m fine...but maybe I’m a little tired
Kosoushi: [so this is] Makabe Kazuki’s power...
Selenoa: this is fear.... the pain of seeing your existence disappear...
Legato: This is a wonderful feeling! Now I have to give it to all the inhabitants of that island
Maris: After you do this, we will destroy them....without fail
Chaos: why must I stay on this ship (??) with you?
Malespero: The time hasn’t come yet. You will become one with Altair and I’ll be the Core. The number of vessels we must destroy has increased but if it’s you, I know we can win
Chaos: You’re not going to get back your island?
Malespero: It’s an empty island. I have already forgotten what happened there....
*flashbacks of Malespero in his child form*
Malespero: I was suffering, I felt like I was going to disappear... To prevent this, I made myself [a vessel of] hatred. This is our everything, Chaos
Kosoushi: I tried so hard but I only destroyed 1/8th of the enemy troops (??). Why?!
Misao: Hum....Mom, I didn’t die...
Yoko: Welcome home
Koyo: I’m home, Chocolat
Kosoushi: no one will say [welcome home] to me....
Maya: She escaped CDC didn’t she?!
Kenji: Calm down, Toomi
Miwa: Maya-onee-chan!
Kosoushi: Toomi-san....what happened?
Mai: We were together with her the whole time, but we were the only ones [to survive]
Blond Alvis Lady: This is frustrating, isn’t it?
Mizoguchi: There are no enemies in this zone (??)
Fumihiko: Once again, I couldn’t protect [her]
Maya: Commander Makabe! Where is my mother?!
Fumihiko: She disappeared at the place where I’m standing right now. I’m sorry
Maya:...what?

Chapter 7 is here! I've been looking forward to posting this one, we get to see how a couple of the characters interact with each other!
First (prologue)
Previous
Next
Read it on ao3!
(Fanfic under cut)
Neo walked into the elevator of the apartment building, checking Agent 4’s text again to make sure it had the right address.
Party at my place on Saturday, 4:00
48 Shellendorf Street Apt. 73
(There’s going to be a surprise!)
Neo had only met Agent 4 once, but they seemed like a fun person. It would love to challenge them to a 1v1 sometime. It was arriving ten minutes late, but that wasn’t unusual for it. Neo knocked on the door and it swung open. Four stood there, beaming.
“Hey, Neo! Glad you could make it! Come on in!” They took its arm and pulled it into the apartment.
The other agents were scattered about the room. Captain stood by the counter, taking handfuls of snacks. Eight sat on the couch, bouncing his leg to the beat of the music blaring from the speakers. Agent 1 and Agent 2 leaned against a wall, chatting. Pearl and Marina were there as well, talking with them. Cuttlefish floated around from group to group. And Deep Cut sat on the floor as Big Man tried to teach Shiver and Frye how to play a card game.
“You were invited too? I didn’t know you three knew Agent 4.” Neo walked over to the trio and tried to make conversation. Things had been awkward since it had beaten them in battle and Neo wanted to try and alleviate the tension.
“We don’t, but we heard Boss Marie say something about a party and we wanted to come. It’s kinda boring though,” Frye said before smashing her cards down. “Bam! I win!”
“Ay, ay… (No you don’t, that’s not how this game works…)”
“Okay!” Four stood in the middle of the room, demanding everyone’s attention. “Everyone’s here so it’s time for the surprise!” With that, Four ran into their bedroom, appearing moments later holding an octopus in their arms. They carefully placed the octopus on the ground as they took their humanoid form. The octoling stood next to Four, towering over the inkling beside them. Their tentacles fell over one eye, the other covered with a set of red sunglasses. They wore a black dress that had been torn on one end, held together by a red string. But the most peculiar thing about them, something that Neo had never seen before, was that their skin was green. It was a little bit scared of them, but its curiosity always won out against fear. Who was this strange person? It peered over at Captain for guidance.
“Meet Acht! My amazing partner!” Four squeezed Acht into a hug, the two of them smiling.
Captain felt like they had just been stabbed by a million needles. Four had never said anything about their partner being sanitized. This was not good. Did Four know? Of course they did they weren’t that much of an idiot. But then why would they trust a sanitized octoling, knowing how dangerous they are? Captain looked to Eight. He would get it, he fought those things firsthand. But he was smiling at them. How could he smile at something like that thing?
“They’re sanitized,” Marie said skeptically. At least she understood.
“Well, sort of. Not mentally. Anymore.” Four struggled to explain.
“I was partially sanitized years ago. When Marina’s Memverse project went online, I got pulled in. Because it was made to help restore the minds of sanitized octolings, it helped me slowly get better. Due to only being partially sanitized, I didn’t even have to climb the spire to start getting myself back.” Acht finally spoke, helping Four to relay their sanitization status to the group. “While the physical effects will likely never go away, or at the very least take a really long time, my mind is no longer sanitized at all.”
“I don’t understand anything that’s happening right now.” Neo butted in.
“Oh right, I forgot we never filled you in on the whole Deepsea Metro thing, sorry Neo!” Four said. “Actually, Eight you’d probably be better suited to explain this.”
Eight nodded, “The Deepsea Metro is an underground subway system run by Kamabo Co, which was created by Commander Tartar. Tartar was an AI created by humans which decided that cephalopods were not fit to be the new dominant species, and so it decided to try and create a perfect version of us. It put octolings like me through tests, promising that they would go to the ‘Promised Land’ if they gathered four Thangs. Those who did, also like me, were to be blended into an ooze which was used to sanitize other octolings. Sanitization causes them to lose all their memories, personality, sense of self, everything. Acht was only partially sanitized, so it wasn’t so extreme. Captain was also partially sanitized for a short time in Tatar’s attempts to stop me from breaking out of the metro.”
As Eight said that, Acht looked up at Captain in surprise. There was someone else here who has been controlled by Tartar? Sure enough, there was a large cyan scar over Captain’s eye. I must have been where the ooze touched her skin. But she just looked away from Acht. If she knew what it was like, why did she seem so reluctant to look at them? Eight continued, “Thankfully I was able to save Captain before the sanitization took hold and escape the metro along with putting a stop to Tartar’s plans. Acht escaped later on after their mind was fully returned to normal, though I’m assuming only recently since they never told me that they finally got out. But I figured they would soon since Four asked me for a map. You don’t go to the metro for a vacation.” Eight eyed Acht with a grin along his face. Acht was worried he’d be upset that they’d never told him, but he seemed to just be happy for them.
“Oh so kind of like what Mr. Grizz tried to do. He also wanted to take over the world and control people, but to the best of my knowledge he didn’t blend anyone.”
“He did try to remove Cuttlefish’s brain though,” Shiver spoke calmly despite the gravity to her words.
“If I had a nickel for every time I almost died in the field, I’d be the richest squid here.” Cuttlefish waved a tentacle in emphasis.
“Not by a long shot.” Pearl smirked.
“Wait wait wait wait!” Callie interrupted the conversation with a shout. “Acht you’re a musician, right? I just looked you up on Splatify and it says you recently released a collab with Off the Hook!? Does this mean you’re going to be making music in Splasville now!?”
“Like hell you are!” Frye jumped up. She was paying attention to the conversation now. “The Splatlands are our turf!”
“You think you can waltz in here and try stealing our spotlight? Think again, greenie!” Shiver pointed at Acht accusingly.
Four shot her a look that said “If you call them that again I will make you feel tremendous pain.”
“Ay ay ay. (Guys let’s not make this a big thing.)” Big Man tried desperately to calm his bandmates.
“Oh what, so that you can abandon us and do a collab with them too?” Frye shifted her rage to the manta ray.
“Ay ay! (No that’s not what I meant!)”
Acht tried to defuse the situation. “Relax, I’m planning on focusing on Inkopolis Square anyway. I might play a few shows in Splatsville but—”
“Oh good luck with that,” Shiver interrupted. She was very clearly threatening Acht’s shows. Before anyone could try to calm them down further, Shiver and Frye stomped out of the apartment, dragging Big Man behind them.
“They’re going to be a problem.” Four placed a hand on Acht’s shoulder.
“We’ll figure that out when we get there.” Acht smiled down at Four, who quickly stood up on their tip toes to leave a kiss on Acht’s lips.
Captain sighed. Agent 4 did seem happy with Acht, but she couldn’t take any chances. When Tartar had been controlling her, there was nothing she could do to resist it. Would a couple strings of code really be enough to restore Acht’s mind? How could she be so sure that they weren’t still loyal to Tartar’s cause?
“We’ll let them have their fun. As worried as I am about that sanitized octoling, I trust Four’s judgement.” Marie appeared over Captain’s shoulder, yet again knowing exactly what she was thinking.
“Unfortunately, you’re right,” she heaved. “I don’t like the idea of keeping a sanitized octoling around, but Eight seems fine with it and he has more experience with those things than I do. I trust Four. If they’re happy, that’s all that matters.”
